Cane Toad

(Rhinella marina)

Rhinella marina is native to South and Central America, Mexico, and southern Texas, but has been introduced within the United States in Florida. Cane toads are large, warty toads typically 4–6 inches long, with tan to reddish-brown or gray coloring and dark spots on their backs. Highly adaptable and voracious predators, they thrive in many ecosystems, especially human-modified areas. Introduced to Florida for pest control and later spread through releases and escapes, breeding populations are now established in central and south Florida. Cane toads are toxic at all life stages, posing risks to humans and pets, and should only be handled with gloves.
